BE STILL AND LISTEN by Amos Smith (Paraclete Press, 2018)
I can say I truly enjoyed this book. It speaks my language. If you are on a search to know God and follow him, you will find value in this book. Many treasures for life and soul exist in the pages of Be Still and Listen. Read this book as a way to mine its reflective loveliness on the life hid in Christ, the knowing of fullness and joy, the apprehending of peace and love in increasing measure: all this as one absorbs the ancient truths through centering of the soul in Christ. Do this during times of meditation by sitting alone with God and listening in the silence. Apprehend what it has to offer through the profound practice of centering prayer. I particularly like Chapter 9, Finding Refuge, for I have experienced this unique phenomenon, this same delight in ‘refuge’ similar as has the author, Amos Smith. There is nothing quite like it. Get away from it all and center your being in the contemplative silences of Christ in the real.
A SWEET DEVOTIONAL FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY: The author of this family-style devotional, Annette Hubbell, contacted me about reviewing her devotional book. I agreed and she sent me a copy. Hubbell has designed the devotionals to be read at mealtime with your children. Each devotional is approximately two minutes in length and includes three components: Scripture— the day’s theme, Grace— a prayer, and Grace Notes— encouraging and applicable spiritual concepts. Care is given to make each selection meaningful to children and adults. I can see the opportunity for further discussion around the table as these topics resonate well with the daily and the spiritual. I have been reading two devotionals back to back per day (I’m trying to catch up) and find myself curious as to what the next one will say. These are even-handed, wisdomy, not preachy, and with a little humor added in. The cover is delightful and the book looks attractive resting on your table (for the aesthetic person). I’m so glad I liked this book! Order it here and enjoy! Learn about Annette Hubbell here.
